As global environmental challenges continue to grow, humanity faces a critical turning point. Protecting our planet's natural systems is no longer just an environmental issue ~ it's essential for our health, our communities, and future generations. Some of the biggest challenges include climate change, plastic pollution, deforestation, food waste, and melting ice caps. While these problems may seem overwhelming, simple daily lifestyle choices can make a meaningful difference. Let's take a closer look at each issue and explore practical ways we can all help.

Climate Change

The warmest years on record since we have kept records have happened within the past 11 years. The rise in greenhouse gas emissions, trap heat in the Earth's atmosphere. It is leading to more extreme weather on our planet. The climate crisis is contributing to more powerful hurricanes, cyclones, typhoons, heatwaves, droughts, and flooding around the world.

Plastic pollution

Global plastic production has increased dramatically ~ from approximately 2 million tons annually in 1950 to more than 400 million tons today. An estimated 91% of all plastic ever produced has not been recycled.

Deforestation

Every hour, forests covering the equivalent of approximately 300 football fields are lost worldwide. It is predicted that by year 2030, the planet will only have 10% of its forests. If this doesn't stop, it could all be gone in less than a century. Forests absorb 30% of human-caused CO2 emissions. Healthy ecosystems store carbon in soil and plants.

Food waste

Reducing food waste is one of the simplest and most effective ways each of us can help protect the environment. Approximately 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted or lost. This amount of food is large enough to feed 3 billion people. Decomposed organic material such as food and yard debris in landfills produces greenhouse gases.

Melting ice caps and sea level rise

The climate crisis is warming the Arctic twice as fast as anywhere else on the planet. This is one of the biggest environmental issues our planet faces today. During the summer of 2020 alone, 60 billion tons of ice from Greenland was lost.

So, what can we do to help slow and stop global warming?

Transitioning to renewable energy is key. Shifting from fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas to renewable energy sources is an important step. Renewable energy sources such as solar wind, hydro and geothermal heating is key. The energy sector is the largest source of global greenhouse gas emissions. Renewable energy sources produce little to no emissions during operation.

Shifting to sustainable agriculture. Reducing food waste is something that should not ever happen. Agriculture accounts for 25% of global emissions. Eating more plant-based meals and buying local/seasonal produce, whenever possible, to reduce transport emissions is an easy transition for all of us. Storing food properly and composting scraps to avoid landfill waste is another simple action. Support your local farmers using sustainable practices by looking for the USDA organic label.

Change takes time. Every small choice adds up to make a big difference for the Earth. We still have the power to heal our planet if we act now. We are not just saving nature, we are protecting our home, our children, and the shared future of everything we love.
